In 2009, President Jimmy Carter severed ties with his former church due to his philosophical disapproval of their teachings.  He has also supported same-sex marriage and science while managing to still be a devoted Christian, proving that tolerance and rationality are not incompatible with spirituality.
And also proving that not all old white guys are the enemy.  Jimmy Carter for World President.

Jimmy Carter is one of my favorite people. He’s so committed to ensuring human rights are respected all over the world, and to helping those in need.

Jimmy Carter was the first President I was really aware of as more than a joke as a child. Bear in mind: Nixon was sworn in for a second term two days before I was born, Ford was a visual joke, (my impression was largely made up of Chevy Chase parodying him on SNL when I was very little,) but President Carter was the first person I knew was President. My father, in one of his disturbing quirks, encouraged me to call him Mr. Peanut.
His work with Habitat for Humanity, The Elders, and his quest for peace and justice have always made me very happy to have known that this man was in office in my lifetime.

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.

One of the reasons I’m running is that there has been an increasingly aggressive war against religion, and in particular against Christianity, in this county, largely by a secular lead in the academic news media and the judicial areas, and I frankly believe it’s important to have some leadership that stands up and says ‘enough.’

Other God soldier and of course Republican NEWT GINGRICH, who let’s face it probably couldn’t fight in any war, much less a war on Christianity. (via inothernews)

Yes. There IS a war on Christianity because we who are not Christian have finally gotten sick and tired of Christian beliefs dominating our lives. I’d love to live in a country where one nation “under god” doesn’t mean one god, but instead represents the anything, everything, and nothing one might believe.

It appears that the authors of the report believe the real problem was that hippies and uppity women unsettled the poor priests who weren’t adequately prepared to deal with the winds of change blowing through society. These traumatized priests clearly acted in inappropriate ways but this is what you’d expect when the social mores come undone in a permissive society. God knows they tried to do their best but they were only human.

Why do I have my doubts? Because Americans lack our Judeo-Muslim traditions of brotherhood, peaceful assembly and debate. Far from thinking of the greater good of their society, most Americans embrace a tribal ethos of “what’s in it for me and my clan?” Their loyalties tend to divide along tribal and regional lines. In recent years, for example, elected officials have mooted the idea that their state should (a) secede from the federal union (Texas), (b) create its own currency (South Carolina), and (c) enforce only those national laws with which its ruling warlords agree (Montana).

I know it’s satire, but it’s also incredibly true in many ways.

About

I spend time on the internet. Too much time. Far too much time.
I'm super crazy in a fun and awesome way (just trust me).
I'm a conniseur of teen fiction (part of the crazy).
I have a habit of creating strange science fiction/fantasy plots, writing them down on bits of paper, and losing them.
I love bad movies and rom-coms. I also love great movies and movies that make me sad.
I've been having a love affair with the television my entire life.
Comics make me happy. Very happy. Especially Swamp Thing.
Right now, I'd rather be eating tacos and listening to Dr. Horrible's Sing A Long Blog in my car.
Or watching Doctor Who with a cocktail in my hand and something baking in the oven.
